The polar bear is found on the arctic coasts and islands of the five countries around the North Pole, the United States (Alaska), Canada, Denmark (Greenland), Norway and Russia. It is the only species that still lives throughout its original range, with an estimated 20,000 still in the wild.
However, even in the seemingly pristine Arctic environment, polar bears are threatened by the spread of hormone-disrupting chemicals and global warming. This affects the polar ice edge ecosystem, the habitat of walrus, seals and penguins, as well as bears.

You can help. Tell the Bush administration to let Americans have their full say on behalf of the polar bears at public hearings.
Every little helps.
Are there any forums on Global Warming?? |

Here is an animated ecard that captures the relaxing side of this animal.

I have posted a few links on that group with some images of the melting ice on Greenland and Antartica. That sort of thing is going to be the end to the polar bears. The warming tempatures leave less time for them to be out hunting for food on the ice. Not to mention they can drown when they are caught unexpectedly on iceflows. It is a pitiful, sad thing to see happening right before our eyes.
Here's a link to Defenders of the Wldlife. They always need more people to sign petitions or/and donate.

I am not sure what it is about them, amazingly cute, obviously loving and while at the same time they are clearly efficient killing mammals (like cats). And maybe it is they have done fairly well since they live in a climate humans don't really want, and now boom, they could be gone. It hurts. |

The Polar Bear Protection Act is in the senate and it can close this loophole so if you could take a little time to contact your Senators & Representative it can pass.
Defenders of the Wildlife has an online petition and I'm sure other wildlife orgs do too.

| | 2644018 | Oct 5, 2007 7:28pm | There is nothing we can do to protect the polar bear without protecting the environment first. The news that came out recently is distressing.
The report by the US Geological Survey predicts that changes in sea ice will result in the loss of about two-thirds of the world's polar bear population by 2050.
At least the media is finally covering global warming. The fools that would not take it seriously are beginning to think about it. I don't know if the polars bears will make it.
Maybe sometime in the far future our grand children will bring them back from near extinction, like we brought the gray wolf back to the Rockies.
Although if the Bush administration has their way, they would wipe the wolves out again. That's another story. |
